We had a new member in class tonight, so we spent some time in introductions. We learned about some of the ‘disposable’ products, that some of the student’s companies manufacture. This led to a discussion about environmental problems created by ‘disposable’ goods, such as plastic. One of the students, talked about her company’s endeavors, to try to find a more environmentally suitable material for their ‘disposable’ diapers, which are a big seller. I remembered seeing a vid. online, about a small company in India, which has started producing ‘edible’ cutlery, with the idea of replacing ‘plastic’ cutlery, which I thought was a great idea, and I showed them a short video of this. I will include a ‘link’ at the end of this blog report, so you can also watch it (if anyone reading the blog is interested). Mr. N. our Chinese student was asked how he had come to live in Japan, and he told us about some of his personal history. The topic of ‘one child per family’ law in China (which was changed a few years ago), and the problems of the unbalanced ‘male/ female ratio’, such a law created. It seems that there are a large number of men in China, who will not be able to get married, as there are not enough women there, now. In the second class, I was alone with Mr. S. and as we haven’t seen each other for a while, he told me what he’s been doing recently, and about his work situation at the moment. Here are some of the words and phrases we looked at this evening…
Diaper (noun) = A thick piece of soft cloth, or paper, fastened between a baby’s legs to catch solid and liquid waste.[note] The British word is ‘nappy‘.
Rein(s) (noun) = [usually plural] A long narrow piece of leather fastened to a horse’s head, that the rider uses to control the horse.
Free rein (noun) = Permission to deal with a particular situation, or do a particular job, in the way that you think is best. eg. He was given free rein, to make whatever changes, he felt were necessary, to get the manufacturing plant turning a profit.
‘Hand / take over the reins’ (phrase) = Give someone control of something, or take control of it. eg. Now that Mr. Watanabe has been transferred to the Tokyo branch, we will need to do his job, until they send someone else, to ‘take over the reins’, in his section.
Whoop (verb) = To shout unexpectedly because you are very happy, or excited about something. eg. Carlos Santana’s guitar solo was so brilliant, that the audience whooped, and whistled excitedly, when he finished. They gave him a standing ovation.
Whooping cough (noun) = [medical] An infectious disease of children, that causes them to cough, and make a loud noise when they breathe. [note] Although this is usually a children’s disease, adults can also contract it.
Whoopee cushion (noun) = A rubber cushion filled with air, that you put on someone’s chair (as a joke), because it makes a loud rude noise when they sit on it.
Enough for today. Thank you for coming. For those of you who would like to watch a short vid. about edible cutlery the ‘Link’ is below. Rita.
