In the first class we talked about winning a big lottery, and how it would change our current lives, and life-styles, what we’d like to do with the money, and whether or not, we would try and keep the winning a secret. We also talked about music, and I told everyone, how I started playing bass again, after having given up playing for 28years. We talked about Ibiza, and how it has changed since the 1980’s. We talked about a variety of topics, but didn’t stay on any one topic, enough to write about. Here are some of the words we looked at this evening…
Con man (or con artist) (noun) = Someone who lies, and cheats people, in order to make them give him/her money. eg. The old couple next door, lost half of their life savings, when a conman talked them into ‘investing’ their money, in a fictitious business scheme.
Fortune (noun) =  A very large amount of money. eg. Donald Trump inherited a huge fortune, when his father died. Make or amass a fortune = [A] She made a fortune from the cosmetic products, that she developed. [B] Over his lifetime, he amassed a huge fortune, through his supermarket chain. Cost a fortune) = A lot of money. eg.[A] Apartment rentals cost a fortune, in that area. [B] His new sports car cost a fortune.  Tell someone’s fortune. = To say (or predict) what will happen to someone in the future (by using Tarot cards, crystal balls, tea-leaves, etc.), or what are claimed to be magic powers. eg. The fortune-teller in the amusement park, told her she would meet a tall, dark, handsome stranger in the near future.
Lottery (noun) = A game designed to raise money by selling lottery tickets, that people buy hoping, that their numbers are chosen by chance in the draw, so that they win a money prize. eg. Japan has two large lotteries in the year = the summer ‘jumbo takarakuji’, and the ‘winter jumbo takarakuji’.
Rip-off (informal noun) = Something that is more expensive than it should be. eg. Don’t buy the dress from that store..it’s a rip-off. I saw the same dress being sold in a store around the corner, for almost half the price!
Revelation (noun) =  A surprising and enjoyable experience, that makes you realize (or understand) something, that you previously had not known, or could not understand. eg. It was a revelation to me, when I finally understood, what they were talking about.  The process of letting people know, or see something, that was previously hidden or secret. eg. The recent revelations about the ‘Panama Papers’, has created scandals all around the world.  A message, that is believed to have come from God.
Tone deaf (adjective) = Unable to sing a tune correctly, because you cannot hear the difference between musical notes. eg. They are a great band of talented musicians, but their ‘tone deaf’ singer prevents them, from becoming successful in the music industry.
