We looked at a popular web  and TV series from the US called “Adam Ruins Everything”. It is a show where the host, Adam, dispels common myths and traditions such as “engagement rings need to cost 3 month’s salary” or “you should drink 6-8 glasses of water a day.”

2016.10.30 Sunday: Free-Talk & Business English

Free-Talk
11am~Noon 6 students
Noon~1pm  7 students
We had a series of lively discussions today based around some simple questions, that allowed students to give a variety of answers.  Examples of such included, “What makes you happy?” and “What is your biggest regret?”  We received many different answers ranging from personal stories, to finding out one student does not have regrets.  They simply get stronger from their experiences and move forward 🙂  We also evaluated what 3 languages would be the most valuable to learn and expressed our feelings as to whether we are ‘cat’ or ‘dog’ people.  I think our class was split 50/50, cat and dog.  As usual we learned a variety of new vocabulary that included some difficult words this week like (hoist, massive, murky, exclusive, superb, pricey, encourage, tremble, ashamed, guarded). We used them in example sentences to clarify meaning.  Thanks again everyone!  See you soon.

Business English
1pm~2pm  3 student
2pm~3pm  3 students
Our lesson today was split into 3 different activities (partner interviews, debates, and seeking out our classmate’s mystery talent).  (1) Partner interviews involved students asking questions of their partner to learn about all aspects of their life.  When finished they reported back to the class what they learned. (2) Today’s debate topic was “a woman and man’s ability to keep both their birth names after marriage instead of choosing only the male’s family name.”  One team debated in favor of the right to keep your own individual birth name, while the other team debated against the right to keep your birth name. (3) The last segment of class was an exercise that began with everyone writing a secret talent they have on paper, and placing it face-down in the center of the table.  We then read all the ‘secrets’ and everyone had to ask questions that would help them gain information to determine whose secret belonged to who.  Great class everyone.  I look forward to next time!

Patting yourself on the back!

=to praise yourself for doing something good.

もう1つが blowing your own horn!

=to tell everyone proudly about your achievements
