Good evening! Tonight we practiced /b/ and /p/ pronunciation and listening skills.
In Free Talking we discussed the origin of the “power button”, public holidays in NZ and Japan, what students spent their New Year money on as children, and spam mail.

It’s here! It’s happening! My super relaxing, sit back and enjoy free talking class!

We starting talking about the new space we got to hold this class with all students full of curiosity. “Is this your house?” “Yes it is~! 😛”, “Why are you doing a class here?” “Are you gonna do more than Fridays?” “Who lives here?”

We started our talk with movies! As the new movie about the band “Queen” is out and I myself really love them. Talking about music, yoga lessons, our favorite places to visit, my experiences of living aboard, travelling aboard and the dangers or no dangers I faced.

Just like that, 3 hours pass by in a flash! 😮
Thank you to those who brought snacks and food to keep the atmosphere fun and lively!
We will have ASIAN NIGHT next week and we will talk about travelling in Asian countries, as well as I’ll be bringing Asian food to get the mood!

2018.12.1 Saturday:イディオムとボキャブラリー強化&リーディング強化

生徒さんからコロケーション(collocation)と熟語は違うんですか?って質問を頂きました。コロケーションに含まれる範囲は広く、take place のように熟語・連語として扱われる場合もあれば、 take a walk(散歩する)のように熟語とは言いにくい例(慣用的に併用される定番の組み合わせ)も含みます。

Examples of collocation
1.スピーチをする           make(give) a speech
2.散歩をする               take a walk
3.旅行に行く               take a trip / go on a trip
4.朝食を抜く               skip breakfast
5.メモをとる               take a note
6.事故にあう               have an accident
7.日記をつける             keep a diary
8.看板を立てる             put up a sign
9.お金をかせぐ             make money
10.時間がかかる           (It) takes time

このような慣用的に使われる表現は素直にそのまま覚えて下さい。例えば6の「事故にあう」、決してmeet なんかは使いませんので、日本語に囚われずにして下さい。


「I like ~ little by little」と「little by little」、とかgraduallyという答えが多いと思うのではないでしょうか。これでもネイティブに通じますが、より自然な表現があります。

have / has come to like / love」で「だんだん好きになる」という表現になります。

have / has come to」は「~するようになる」という意味で、始めはあまり好きではなかったものが、徐々に好きになることを表す場合によく使う表現です。

I’ve come to like Velco.(私はだんだんVelcoがすきになった)このように使います。


・I have come to appreciate ~(〜をだんだん感謝するようになった)

・I have come to realize ~(〜にだんだん気づくようになった)

・I have come to understand ~(〜をだんだん理解するようになった)

・I have come to believe ~(〜をだんだん信じるようになった)

・I have come to know ~(〜をだんだん知るようになった)

よく使われる表現で、かつ色々なシチュエーションで使えるフレーズなので、ぜひ「have / has come to」という表現も活用していきましょう!

今日は”My first fast.”というタイトルのエッセイを読みました。「私の初めての絶食」という初めて経験した4日間の絶食とその後の感想を書いたエッセイですが、中々興味深い内容でした。

Vocabularies of the day:

Nutrition(栄養)、fasting(絶食)、negative effects(マイナス効果), processed food(加工食品), easy or extreme(簡単なのか徹底的なものか), supportive(協力的な), skeptical(半信半疑な), sip(すする、チビチビ飲む), torture(拷問), devour(むさぼり食べる、ガツガツ食べる), growl(グーグー鳴る), surreal(現実離れした), gobble down(ガツガツ食べる), mounds of food(山盛りの食べ物), witness(目撃する)。

注)( )内の日本語は当エッセイ文中にて使われている意味で表記しています。

レッスン後生徒さんと雑談したのですが、英語、英会話を学びに来る事自体が目的化してしまっているとの自戒でした。本来コミュニケーションの道具の一つである英語を習得し、その英語で何を語る、若しくわ何に使うのかが本来最も大切な事じゃないでしょうか? 目標は高くもって頑張りましょう~! Good luck!

Hi everyone! In pronunciation class tonight we worked on /ck/ and /g/ phonemes, and tested each other’s ability to catch them correctly in sentences read aloud.
In F3 class tonight we discussed childhood games such as bull rush, knucklebones, and similar games and toys in Japan. We also “put on our tinfoil hats” to share conspiracy theories!

Our topic today was at the airport ✈

What do you see at the airport?
Check-in counter, check-in kiosk, baggage check, security gate, screening area, ticket agent, arrival and departure monitors, life vest, oxygen mask, etc

What do you do at the airport?
Check-in, show, go through, board, find, stow/store, fasten, turn off, turn on, take off, land, claim, etc

We practiced conversation at the immigration;

Immigration officer: Hello, may I see your passport please?
Passenger: Here you are.
I.O: What’s the purpose of your visit?
P: On business, on holiday, here as a student, visiting a friend, etc
I.O: For how long are you here for?
P: For 5 days, a week, 3 months, etc
O.I: Where will you be staying?
P: At ____ hotel, at my friend’s, with my home stay family, etc
O.I: Thank you.
P: Thank you.

We did a warm up with “ai” pronounce.

Then we practiced “ay” sound. Such as;

We made fun sentences using these!

I was in Seoul Korea for 5 very cold days! Everyone was so curious!
So everyone took turns and asked me a question (while we eat Korean snacks) about my trip and what I felt about the city, people, environment, atmosphere, fashion and of course food. 💛

We discussed the differences between Japan and Korea which lead to my experience visiting aboard and living in other countries. Always be careful going somewhere new!
